Unlocking Your Dreams with Personal Growth for a Fulfilled Life

What are your dreams and why?

I love helping people. Seeing individuals get better in every area of life brings me great joy. I wanted to make an impact, but I didn’t know how. As a child, I had two main dreams: earning a PhD and writing books that transform lives. I was unsure how to write books then, but I knew how to get a PhD. I loved applied sciences. Perhaps I could help people with sciences by making life-saving medicine. Thus, I went on the path of a PhD in a field that I loved.

What education/ work skills or experiences do you have?

I did an undergraduate degree in biotechnology, a master’s in microbiology, and worked as a process development officer (job description – unlimited) in a biotechnology department of a research institution before the PhD in biochemistry.

For this job, I traveled locally helping privately owned businesses and government ministries identify and tackle problems to reach their goals. I traveled internationally to European and American countries learning techniques used by other countries to solve technical problems.

By the time I entered the PhD, I had acquired skills such as technical writing, grant writing, project management, cross-function collaborations, relationship building, customer service, and problem-solving among others.

Consider the specifics of the experiences: The structure/function relationship of an enzyme.

I then went on to pursue a PhD in biochemistry (enzymology).  Sound far-fetched? Allow me to explain.

I studied the relationships between the structure (the who – shape or makeup) and the function (what it does) of an enzyme across diverse bacteria. Because I am a high achiever with a biotechnology and microbiology background my mission extended beyond understanding – I wanted to leverage the products to combat bacterial infections.

I designed experiments to trace the enzyme’s evolutionary journey – exploring its early origins, examining its structural aspects, and unraveling its functions. I discovered that while the enzyme’s structure remained consistent across different bacteria, its functions evolved, shaped by the specific bacterial host environment.

Overcoming numerous technical challenges, I gained knowledge that brought us closer to developing products to combat bacterial infection.

Further, I discovered a newfound passion for writing during my thesis work. My thinking and communication skills elevated. My dreams to make a positive impact in people’s lives reemerged.

How to use personal growth for innovation

With new insights and experiences, it was time to innovate and leverage my understanding of myself and all my experiences (my structure) to become the best version of myself (function). This process required an intentional focus on my personal growth.

What is personal growth?

Personal growth, often referred to as personal development or self-growth is about understanding and developing oneself. It empowers us to reach our full potential in every area of our lives: physical, intellectual (career and/or education), emotional, spiritual, relational, and financial.

To grow ourselves, we first need to know ourselves. We need to grow in areas that matter to have a positive impact on all aspects of our lives. Therefore, a one-size-fits-all growth program may not work for all of us. The more advanced we are (in our education or careers), the more intentional we must be about our growth.

As a result of my own intentional personal growth journey, I wrote a book that is transforming lives. Check it out here

Consider your own structure and function.

We may not be enzymes, but as individuals (and organizations) we have our unique structures or “shapes.” This includes our strengths, weaknesses, passions, natural abilities, personal traits, and our life experiences spanning childhood, school, work, and personal life. We all have a distinct “shape, ” which determines our function in life.

It is our responsibility to invest time to understand our own structure enabling us to function purposefully, creating lasting and positive impact, whether as individuals in jobs, businesses, or as organizations. However, in the hustle and bustle of life, we often overlook areas where we lack awareness. This is where a consultant or coach like myself comes in to assist you on your journey.
