Hi Family and friends,
How are you doing?
Are you currently in a situation where you are seeking direction for your life?
This post is the second part of the series Finding Direction at Life’s crossroads: Seeking the Kingdom of God.
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” – Matthew 6:33
Are We Seeking Comfort or Growth?
When most people think about growth, they picture financial success—more money, a bigger house, a nicer car. While these things aren’t bad in themselves, how we pursue them can either fuel or stall our growth.
True growth isn’t just about material things. It’s about stepping into the opportunities God places before us. Sometimes, those opportunities come naturally. Other times, especially in places with fewer resources, we may need to make bold moves—leaving behind what’s familiar to embrace what God has prepared.
Growth is rarely comfortable. It often comes with fear, disruption, and the need for personal transformation. But even in uncertainty, we are not alone. God is present amid the storm, guiding us through life’s major decisions.
Who or What Are We Serving?
At every crossroads, we face a choice: Will we follow God’s plan or chase after material gain?
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon.” – Matthew 6:24
The Bible warns us about mammon—the pursuit of wealth, status, things in a way that pulls us away from God. The question is:
What will we choose?
A decade ago, I stood at a crossroads. I had two options: pursue a PhD in biochemistry or buy a house. A home would have given me a sense of security and ownership, but it would have delayed or even derailed my dreams.
I chose the PhD. That decision led me to my destiny – God’s plan for my life as described in Jeremiah 29:11:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
But knowing the plan is one thing—walking it out is another. There will be uncertainty, fear, and loss. Is this why the scripture says “plans to prosper you and not to harm you.” At times it will appear as if it were to harm us, it will not. God is for us and He loves us, do not be afraid. Although sometimes we need to work it out with fear and trembling.
How to find direction for Our lives: From Dreams to Destiny
To fulfill the dreams God has placed in our hearts, we must grow spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, relationally, financially, and through rest and recreation. Prayer is essential, but action is required. Growth is a lifestyle, not a one-day-a-week commitment.
When I chose my dream, I faced painful challenges: betrayal, a car accident, and deep loss. Every dream comes with its own set of challenges, be prepared. Sometimes we want to hold on to the life we knew, because it felt easier, but as John Maxwell says, “You have to give up to go up.”
- Spiritual Growth – I had to forgive those who betrayed me. I read my Bible and went to church, but real growth happened when I truly let go. Knowing this may take time, let us be gentle with ourselves.
- Physical Growth – I started running and became intentional about my physical health and well-being. I started behaving as if I already had what I hoped for e.g. I dressed for where I wanted to go.
- Emotional Growth – I sought therapy to process the changes in my life. Talking to others helped me gain perspective. Later when I had to make major decisions I had clarity even without the therapist’s intervention.
- Mental Growth – My counselors pointed out my resilience and mental strength. At the time, I didn’t fully grasp how valuable that was, but looking back, I realize it carried me through the PhD and everything else.
- Relational Growth – I reconnected with old friends and built relationships with people who aligned with my vision. I also had to release relationships that no longer fit where God is taking me.
- Financial Growth – I received a scholarship for my PhD, which required me to teach and tutor—opening up new financial opportunities.
- Recreational Growth – Before leaving for my studies, I rested and celebrated with family and friends, embracing moments of celebration and rest.
Every God-given dream requires growth in these areas. When we focus on growing, everything else falls into place. As such, after the PhD, I grew into writing a book, starting a blog, working in tech, and working in a non-profit organization. Every dream builds on the last as we grow. We do not need to ask what is next. And we do not need everything the world says to obtain our God-given dreams.
What does it mean to seek His righteousness?
The choices I made ten years ago were right for that season of my life—I had no dependents. But as we grow, our decisions become more complex.
Growth sometimes means staying when we’d rather leave—choosing kindness, compassion, and forgiveness for the sake of family and those who depend on us. That’s what it means to seek His righteousness.
Righteousness isn’t about perfection, status, positions, or religious traditions. It’s about living out the values Jesus modeled—kindness, forgiveness, compassion, family, and growth.
Are We Ready to Step Into the Life God Has for Us?
Jesus, fully human and fully God, struggled in his humanity just as we do. He overturned tables in the temple courts in anger because people were selling instead of worshipping, got frustrated with his disciples because they were slow to understand what he was teaching (several times), and felt sadness when his friend Lazarus died.
Yet, the scriptures say he did not sin.
He overcame everything we will ever go through so we could live abundantly. The storms will come, however, we have peace in the midst of the storm when we believe and trust in God and lean not to our understanding.
If we are ready to step into the full, satisfied, and abundant life, commit to growing in all areas—not by our strength, but by the leading of the Holy Spirit. Reemembering that it is a process and not just a destination.
It will not always be easy, but we will overcome every obstacle by embracing the right values.
